Book review: Love's a Witch by Tricia O'Malley [blog tour]

Ever since reading the delightful Phoebe Winchester series by Gretchen Rue, I've adored the whole "small town romance with a witchy twist" genre (yes, I'm calling it a genre). So I was delighted when I got my eager hands on Love's a Witch, especially when I realised it was set in beautiful Scotland (hello hunky Scottish men!). And, let me tell you, I was not disappointed.

About Love's a Witch by Tricia O'Malley

Sloane MacGregor and her two younger sisters are cursed, They haven't been able to live in the same location long enough to set roots since they were children as mayhem follows them whenever they start to get comfortable. But when she's about to turn twenty-five she returns to her childhood home of Briarhaven. Sloane wants to be with her grandmother when she comes into her magic on her birthday. And, just maybe, they can figure out a way to break the curse once and for all.

But the curse that has been following the sisters around their entire life is not that easily defeated. In fact, this time it comes with a big snow storm that turns the entire town of Briarhaven into an inexplicable winter wonderland months before the first flutter of snow usually falls from the sky. Soon, Sloane not only has the challenge of figuring out the extend of her brand-new magical powers, but also, how to keep the townspeople – and grumpy but oh so handsome mayor Knox – on her side as the curse wrecks havoc through the streets of Briarhaven...

My review of Love's a Witch

Love's a Witch is the PERFECT cosy book to read this October! 🪄 🐈‍⬛ 🐉

There are witches, dragons, and even a delightful creature called an emberwolf, which I'm now absolutely obsessed with. Add in the curse following the MacGregors around, meetings of the Charms (the local witches coven), and Sloane's new magic misfiring (particularly when her feelings are heightened... if you know what I mean) and you've got yourself a suitably seasonal story (although less Salem with its witch hunters and more a Disney-fied day out in Hogsmeade).

I often find myself wishing I lived in a small-town setting from one of my books or TV-series, and Briarhaven is no exception. They even have a Stars Hollow-esque festival, called the "Pinecones & Peppermint Fest". Sure, it was borne out of desperation to hide the effects of the curse from the eyes of non-magical visitors, but who wouldn't want to visit an event with such a delightful name?

Not to mention the (mostly) wonderful people that make up the town. In particular, of course, its brooding mayor, Knox. It didn't take much for sparks to fly between him and Sloane (sometimes quite literally) and I loved it. Author Tricia O'Malley managed to write the perfect blend of a genuinely gripping storyline with a gentle dash of spice, the former not being sacrificed for the latter (which, sadly, happens so often in books these days).

Despite the witches and all-consuming curse at the heart of the story, this wasn't a super high-stakes fantasy novel. There was just enough tension to keep the characters – and readers – on their toes, but not so much that it became a stressful reading experience. On contrary, I had a delightful time with the witty banter and adorable creatures that filled the pages of this book.

If you love rewatching Gilmore Girls, Charmed, and Practical Magic this time of year, then Love's a Witch is the book for you. It has all the charm of a small town setting filled with quirky shops and characters, with a spellbinding dash of magic and mayhem thrown in for good measure. Add a sizzling romance storyline and some delicious Scottish accents, and you've got yourself an enchanting read to kick off the witching season.
